Each clip has a alpha channel and a luma matte that you can add the shadows on top of your footage to make a more of a ripped impact. These grunge destroyed transitions can be simulated like paper, cloth, ripped holes, breakthrough into a new scene, etc. A sample Adobe After Effects(CC and newer) template is provided to give you an example setup of how to use an alpha or luma matte in your project as well as a help read-me file.
