(Song Dynasty Official Robe Sculpture Practice)
During the Northern and Southern Dynasties, officials began using "官家" (Guānjiā) to refer to the emperor. By the Song Dynasty, it became customary to address the emperor as "官家" in informal contexts—whether by palace maids, eunuchs, court officials, or commoners. When speaking of the Son of Heaven from the Zhao family, "官家" was the commonly used term.
As recorded in the Dictionary of Song Dynasty Bureaucracy on the first day of the second lunar month in the sixth year of the Yuanfeng era (1083), the significance of the散官 (sǎn guān, honorary ranks) hierarchy under the Song official system was closely tied to regulations on ceremonial attire: officials of the third rank and above wore purple robes, the fifth rank and above wore crimson, the sixth and seventh ranks wore green, while the eighth and ninth ranks wore blue.
It is worth noting that these color classifications began to shift after the Ming Dynasty—for instance, in the attire of county magistrates. Further details regarding the Ming Dynasty system may be explored in future works.
